Although the MLB free agent class of 2023 isn’t over yet, it’s always good to look ahead to see what’s next.
In the 2023-2024 offseason, there are a number of big names hitting free agency.
That means this season is a big year for these players as they have a chance to break through into a big contract.
Here’s a look at the two players who could benefit the most from a good season.
1. Rafael Devers
Rafael Devers has consistently become one of the best offensive third basemen in baseball.
He has a powerful swing and isn’t afraid to be aggressive on the pitch.
This has paid off for him as he has posted stellar years since 2019.
Red Sox CBO Chaim Bloom in @BBisntBoring Podcast on extension by Rafael Devers:
“The way I look at this is, if there’s something within reason, or even a little bit unreasonable, it’s something we’re going to look for. And we’re serious about it.”

Now, he’s entering his final year of arbitration and is likely to land a big contract.
However, that could go even higher if he has an MVP-caliber season this year.
If Devers can perform at that level, there’s no question he could be awarded a $300 million-plus contract.
On the other hand, if you take a big step back, you’ll still get a great deal, but it will probably be at a lower value.
Either way, he has a chance to make money, but a strong season could be very profitable for Devers next offseason.
2. Julio Urias
Somewhat quietly, Julio Urías has worked his way up to become one of the best pitchers in baseball.
The numbers don’t lie: He has an ERA below three in three of his last four seasons.

This includes last year, where he led the National League in ERA, posting a solid 2.18 mark and finishing third in Cy Young voting.
After the big contracts that arms like Jacob deGrom and Justin Verlander were able to land, there’s no reason Urias isn’t in the running for a big deal of his own.
However, it depends on this season.
If he can capture his first Cy Young award, there’s no reason he can’t sign a contract in the $300 million range.
