Mohammed Siraj has developed into one of India’s best fast bowlers in the longer formats of the game. He made his ODI debut against Australia in January 2019 at the Adelaide Oval. Siraj was unable to make an instant impact, but has gradually improved.
So far in his international career, Siraj has played 14 tests and 16 ODIs for the Indian cricket team. Talking about his numbers, Siraj has taken 43 wickets in 27 Test innings at a fantastic bowling average of 29.35. His best match figures have been 8/126.
When it comes to the over 50 format, Siraj has bagged 24 wickets in 16 ODI innings at a cheap rate of under five runs per over. His numbers are pretty impressive, but what these numbers don’t represent is the aggressiveness displayed by Siraj on the pitch.
In the past, foreign fast bowlers often hit Indian batsmen, but the trend has changed somewhat now that Siraj has been involved in a heated exchange with the next three batsmen.
#1 Mohamed Siraj vs. litton das
In the ongoing test match between India and Bangladesh at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Mohammed Siraj had a war of words with Bangladeshi batsman Litton Das. After Das defended an early innings delivery from Siraj, the Indian fast bowler asked him to play smart cricket.
Das acted as if he didn’t hear what Siraj said as he gestured for her to speak aloud. In the next installment, Siraj surprised Das with his beat and shook his stump. Virat Kohli joined Siraj in his aggressive celebrations as the two Indian players saw off Litton.
When asked what he told Litton Das, Siraj revealed after the end of the day’s play:
“No nothing. I just told him it’s not T20 format. This is Test cricket so play sensible cricket.”
#2 Mohamed Siraj vs. Najmul Hossain Shanto
India and Bangladesh battled it out in a three-match ODI series earlier this month. Bangladesh won the series 2-1, but there were some outstanding performances from the Indian team. One of them was from Mohammed Siraj, who worried the Bangladeshi batsmen with his pace and aggression.
During the second ODI of the series, Siraj sled Najmul Hossain Shanto. The Bangladeshi batsman hit it for a four in the eighth of the inning. Siraj then beat him twice in the next two installments. The Indian pacemaker soon walked up to his opponent and said something to him that was not picked up by the stump’s microphone.
#3 Mohammed Siraj vs. James Anderson
During India’s tour of England in 2021, Siraj got into an argument with veteran England pacer James Anderson. The incident took place during the third day of the first test of the series hosted by Nottingham.
Siraj was unable to connect with a finisher on a pitch thrown by Anderson. The two players had an exchange of words after that, but the stump microphone was unable to capture their conversation.
