Paris Saint-Germain produced a ruthless start to beat Villarreal 6-0 on Tuesday and set a new Champions League record, reaching four goals faster than any team in the competition’s history.

João Neves opened the scoring in the ninth minute, Désiré Doué doubled the lead in the 12th, Senny Mayulu added a third a minute later, and Fabián Ruiz completed the burst in the 17th minute. According to UEFA, the fourth goal arrived after 16 minutes and two seconds, beating the previous record of 20 minutes set by Real Madrid against Dinamo Zagreb in 2011.

All three goals after the opener stemmed from Villarreal errors as the Spanish side tried to play out from the back or lost possession in their own half. Ruiz added a second early in the second half, and 17-year-old David Boly scored on his Champions League debut shortly after coming on, completing a night that left Villarreal with no answer to the reigning champions.

The win kept PSG top of the league-phase standings with a perfect record of 12 points from four matches, while Barcelona and Aston Villa are among a group on nine points.

Bayern Munich also underlined their title credentials with a 2-0 win at Atlético Madrid. After a stubborn first half from the hosts, second-half goals from Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer secured victory in Madrid.

Barcelona eased past Aston Villa 3-0 at home. Lamine Yamal opened the scoring in the seventh minute and Raphinha added a second-half double, handing Villa a first defeat of the league phase in a match that had been billed as one of their sternest tests so far.

At Old Trafford, Manchester United came from two goals down to beat Roma 3-2. Matheus Cunha struck twice in quick succession after the break to overturn the deficit, completing a dramatic comeback that followed protests by home supporters before kick-off.

Inter Milan were equally convincing in Rotterdam, beating Feyenoord 3-0. Yann Bisseck curled in the opener from long range, Pio Esposito headed a second before half-time, and Piotr Zielinski completed the scoring from distance after the restart.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Galatasaray beat Stuttgart 2-0, Sporting CP won 1-0 at Shakhtar Donetsk, Bodø/Glimt drew 0-0 with Lille, and LASK thrashed Slovan Bratislava 4-0.

Stadiums across Europe fell silent before kick-off in memory of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who died earlier on Tuesday after a collision in a match on Monday.
