Andor’s showrunner avoided Star Wars fan service at all costs

If you’re looking for a self-indulgent Star Wars show packed with cameos, then I walkr probably not for you. The series is a prequel centered on the character of Diego Luna from rogue one, a rogue thief turned spy. And though characters from across the Star Wars universe, like Rebel Alliance leader Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly), will appear all over the world. AndorShowrunner Tony Gilroy told IGN that he was more concerned with telling a good story than meeting fan demands.

“We didn’t want to do anything that was fan service,” Gilroy explained. “We never wanted to have anything… the mandate from the beginning was that it would be absolutely not cynical, that the show would be real and honest.”

After some delays, the 12-episode series will premiere on Disney Plus on September 21. In addition to Luna and O’Reilly, Andor also starring Stellan Skarsgård (oh mom), Adria Arjona (Morbius), and Denis Gough (Colette). Forest Whitaker reprises his role as Saw Gerrara, a character who first appeared in star wars, clone warsbefore appearing in rogue one.
