It’s been 13 years since James Cameron’s original. Avatar And, really, has anything changed in that time? [checks notes] ok maybe a few things, but I need to be specific about the major turning points I’m thinking about here: Has anything changed about how celebrities arrive at blockbuster movie releases?
Here at Polygon we love a reason to travel back in time through the power of press line photography, to imagine walking the red carpets of our favorite movies and realizing that, oh yeah, the early 1990s. 2000 was a different time. The cast of The Lord of the Rings has really grown since the premiere of Fellowship of the Ring. the premiere of pirates of the Caribbean it was a moment. So on the occasion of Avatar: The Path of Waterwe had to go back… We had to go back to Pandora.
But here’s the twist: the lineup in 2009 Avatar The premiere doesn’t look all that different from a 2022 gala. Thirteen years of monoculture have left us pretty much in the same place, with some nuanced differences. Some famous people have stepped away from the spotlight. Others are here to stay. Styles have changed, but no one in the Avatar The premiere was packed with Keira Knightley.
The big takeaway is this: Danny DeVito had a blast at the Avatar premiere.

DeVito, along with his wife, Rhea Perlman, and daughter, Lucy DeVito, rocked the blue carpet in 2009 knowing full well that they were about to see a game changer. An odd commonality among many now-classic movie releases is that most people don’t seem to know what they’re in for. The big names don’t appear outside of the main cast, and the lower-tier celebrities who often seem to be in the supermarket.
This was Avatar! A technological marvel over a decade in the making that would go on to become the highest grossing movie of all time! Why does no one but Danny DeVito give a shit?!?!

These guys get it. They were there. Sigourney Weaver, thriving on her return to big sci-fi movies. Cameron looks like he just ran 18 victory laps. Sam Worthington, very happy to be there. Michelle Rodriguez…heck yeah. The only one who rivals Danny DeVito in the Avatar carpet. Radiant. Killing him. Everyone in neutrals, she taking the company by storm in pink. Why wasn’t she in Avatar: The Path of Water? I blame Vin Diesel. Take Captain Trudy Chacón back to Pandora.

Zoe Saldana also seems to have had a lot of fun at the Avatar premiere, probably because half the people who saw the movie wouldn’t know it was her under all that CG Neytiri makeup. Something something red carpet motion capture.

Brendan Fraser was at the end of his action film career when Avatar premiered in 2009, but she was easily one of the most famous people to pay their respects to Cameron. Her necklace is definitely something you would see on Pandora. Not quite DeVito levels of enthusiasm here, but good spirit. Surprisingly, she is now in the Oscars conversation for her work on The whale Such as the path of water hits theaters. Fraser endured.

Masi Oka, from when Heroes it was on, gracing the blue carpet. That wasn’t even a Fox show. There was no professional obligation to be there, as far as we know. The man just wanted to see Avatar! If he had brought his own snacks, he would rival DeVito.

And here is astronaut Buzz Aldrin with his then wife Lois Driggs Cannon. I can only imagine what Buzz Aldrin thought Avatar.

How tough was Danny DeVito? Avatar? The archives are full of pass-and-repeat moments from the actor just livingbut then he returns to the carpet to take photos with the cast of It’s always sunny in Philly. “The gang watches Avatar(probably because Fox invited anyone to a popular FX show, but hey, they made the time.) Some fun trivia: always sunny has been running for so long that it was already in season 5 when Avatar it hit theaters, and it’s still on to this day. Take that, James Cameron.

Maybe Jason Alexander loves movie premieres. Maybe he has a lot of free time thanks to Seinfeld residual copyright. But the man was in the Shrek premiere and the Avatar I premiere nearly a decade apart wearing the same casual outfit and it stands out to me. And yet you don’t seem as excited to be there as Danny DeVito?

The Power of Fox Synergy: Get three hot young stars to your big movie premiere to promote your new movie. It looks like Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, and Alexandra Daddario don’t give a shit about seeing Jake Sully embark on the Iknimaya challenge in the Hallelujah Mountains later that night, but if they’re going to sell Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning ThiefThey have to face!
Michael Mann and his wife, Summer, came by and they actually look excited. Not DeVito hype, necessarily, just happy to be out of the house to watch a great movie from a master.

Cuba Gooding Jr., another actor who was constantly on the premiere circuit from 2000 to 2010, walked the Avatar blue carpet with their children. Fun fact: Mason Gooding is now a full time actor/nepo baby who was very good at Shout out 2022!

Tom Arnold experiencing real life in 3D while attending the Avatar premiere. A rival to DeVito, but less punished.
Nothing can beat Danny DeVito in the Avatar premiere. And the highs continued into the night…

How much did Danny DeVito love the Avatar premiere? Why, he returned just this month to the premiere of Avatar: The Path of Water. A just man who would protect the tulkuns with all his might.
