Wednesday (who renounces the addams familyThe main theme of ) offers a new perspective on the creepy family. One of the most significant changes to her mythology comes through her protagonist granting Wednesday psychic powers. Although characters like Morticia (she could blow smoke on the 1960s TV series) and Uncle Fester (has electrical powers) have exhibited superhuman abilities over the years, that hadn’t been the case on Wednesday. Aside from his vast intellect and his ability to drink poison without any side effects, as shown in Addams Family Values, she had typically been portrayed as a somewhat normal human girl. In WednesdayOn the other hand, she experiences psychic visions of the past and the future, which helps her navigate the mystery plaguing her new school. As such, Wednesday it shows a different side of the titular protagonist than has been previously seen.
Wednesday Addams Powers of Vision Explained
In the show, Wednesday Addams’ abilities are said to have manifested months before the events of the series. His ability is activated by touching people. In Wednesday In episode 1, for example, he is able to identify Pugsley’s bullies after touching him. He can also see the future, as shown when he sees a man die in a car accident after colliding with him, which eventually happens. The visions of him are aggressive, causing him to throw his head back and go into a trance-like state. As he described it on Wednesday: “They come on without warning and feel like electroshock therapy, but without the satisfying afterburn.”
Wednesday’s abilities grow stronger throughout the show, eventually allowing her to interact with the subjects of her visions, such as her ancestor, Goody Addams, who plays a pivotal role in the story. Wednesday (who has been played by different actresses over the years) inherited her abilities from her mother, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), but there’s a big difference between the manifestation of her powers. As Morticia explained in episode 5: “Our psychic ability resides in the spectrum of who we are.” Morticia describes herself as “Pigeonwhose affable personality gives him positive visions. Wednesday, on the other hand, is a “Raven,” whose darkness imbues her with powerful yet violent visions.
Why did the Netflix show give Wednesday Addams powers?
Wednesday purports to be a new interpretation of the addams family. There have been multiple adaptations of the property over the decades, both on television and in film. Most of them have stuck to a fairly conventional approach to basic character traits. Having so many adaptations following the same formula could have eventually led to the franchise becoming stale, especially with several installments struggling critically. Thus, the intention with the Tim Burton film Wednesday show was to do something different. As co-showrunner Alfred Gough explained to Empire (via CBR):
“Wednesday Addams is such an iconic character. We thought, ‘What if you make her 16 and take her out of the family and put her in a boarding school, so she has to start a new kind of family?’ We wanted to put her in a setting where she still feels like you’re in the Addams Family world, but completely different.”
The intention to open a new chapter for the addams family it relates not only to the setting of the show and Wednesday’s age, but also to his psychic abilities. Giving her and Morticia powers allows for an exciting take on the franchise without interfering with the core conceptual elements of it. After all, the supernatural has always been central to that world. With that, the Addamses retain their ghoulish charm, while benefiting from the expansion of their mythology. Wednesday’s powers are not only good for her show, but also for the addams family property as a whole, as it breaks ground for new kinds of stories for the creepy, wacky family.
