When players want to create weird backstories for their characters, they need a weird tone to hold on to. That’s exactly what Saltmarsh Ghosts offers, giving players a slightly different atmosphere compared to what they might be used to with their narratives.

Set on the shoreline of the haunting Azure Sea, this campaign promises hauntings, sea shanties, and all manner of piracy shenanigans. It’s a great base game to build on, sinister on the surface and sinisterly strange the deeper the player goes. The drowned sailors provide some conflict to overcome!

While it’s important to mention the official campaigns, there are many narratives made by Dungeon Masters being discussed on Reddit. One is based on disappearances. LadyVulcan said, “In the game, people sometimes just disappeared. Anyone could… But it’s not just the adventurers, it’s the merchants and townspeople and whatnot. And literally no one knows why.”

It’s a novel idea that hilariously takes place when players are actually missing from the party. LadyVulcan goes on to say that, strangely, the explanation is a cosmic war in which players are recruited, but the comic effect of players randomly disappearing adds an oddly mysterious twist.

Sometimes the funniest campaigns can be parodies of pre-existing franchises that players can get involved in. JordanIBLewis said: “Basically copied Star Trek: The Next Generation. Sail the ocean, contact new countries and kingdoms, use diplomacy to get them to join the “federation”. Replaced the threat of The Borg with Mind Flayers.”

It wouldn’t be the first or the last time that a Dungeon Master used a television series to forge his campaign for the party. But such a setup allows people to use the tropes of small screen iteration, which is weirder and funnier when there’s such a clash of genres.

This weird concept is explained as “The party is dead and they are on a purgatory type train that makes different stops in different realities/planes. Made to be like a one/two shot series with a great overarching story that the demons are trying to sabotage the train”.

The premise allows players to visit any number of intriguing worlds, but the very nature of the fact that the party is already dead is quite fun to play. The mystery of why the train is being sabotaged adds a grounding element to an otherwise overblown and misplaced affair.

The alliance

Playing as monstrous villains can be fun. That’s why Blue_Harbinger created the compelling campaign stating, “Each member of the party belongs to one of the game’s monstrous races. They are tasked with uniting their various ill-tempered peoples to take on the invading, disciplined and organized front of the human expansion”. United, you stand a chance, if only Golthrok the Knotty could stop using goblins for soccer balls there.”

Even the depiction of how that campaign can play out is hilarious, as these factions will likely never get along due to their many differences. It is easy to imagine how these figures would respond to each other, if they had been sitting down for so-called peace talks.

WillofTheCollective discussed their campaign saying, “I’m working on a western combined with a Gravity Falls themed campaign. Small clusters of towns in the wastelands are where people go to get away from everything else.”

The premise is absolutely bizarre, with a western backdrop written alongside a Gravity Falls Theming Those familiar with the animated show will be aware of some of the comedic elements that could be woven throughout this clever planning.
