Robert Redford, founder of the Sundance Institute, said: “Supporting independent artists has always been the bedrock of the Institute and the fuel behind the festival. The fact that we have been able to uphold this primary purpose is a testament to the vitality of the Institute and the festival platform as a place to discover new films, ideas and artists. For nearly three decades, Eugene has been working on a parallel path with many of the same values and goals in mind. I am very pleased to have him as the new director of the festival, helping to support a new generation of artists, and taking us into the next decade of the Sundance story.”

Hernandez is currently leading the New York Film Festival as festival director and will be leaving after this year’s festival, which takes place from September 30 to October 16. The position started in 2020, and over the past three years has moved to new outlets initially from COVID and last year has brought the New York Film Festival back to cinemas in Lincoln Center and around New York. Prior to joining FLC, Hernandez was co-founder and editor-in-chief Indiewire, which he helped build over 15 years into a leading editorial publication for independent and international films, filmmakers, industry, and audiences. He is a traveling member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and serves on the board of advisors for SXSW, SeriesFest, and Art House Convergence, which Sundance supports.
