Before Prince Harry decided to propose to Meghan Markle in November 2017, the royal heir had one tried-and-true relationship to depend on: a dog. In the new docuseries harry and meghanThe prince jokes that he wasn’t sure what Suits the actress would accept her engagement ring, but figured the odds were in her favor since Guy, Markle’s pet beagle, was staying at her house. ‘She had already moved Guy,’ said Harry. “So she was holding Guy hostage.” In the series, part of the couple’s headline deal with Netflix, the couple reveal the full story of their engagement, including the significant role Guy played during the proposal.
After asking his grandmother, the Queen, for permission to marry Meghan, Harry placed 15 electric candles on the north lawn outside Nottingham Cottage, his home inside Kensington Palace. On that romantic November night, as the couple were preparing dinner indoors, Harry opened a bottle of champagne, immediately arousing the suspicions of his bride-to-be.
“I opened a bottle of champagne while she was oiling the chicken and that gave the game away a bit,” Harry says during episode 2. “She said, ‘You don’t drink champagne. What is the occasion?’ I was like, ‘I don’t know. She just had it lying around here, whatever.’”
Meghan adds, laughing, “It was a magnum.”
Though he told Meghan “not to peek” as he laid out the blanket and candles, she nonetheless took one look and called out to her friend, Jess, just as the proposal was about to happen. In harry and meghan, we listen to a recording of his message: “Oh my God, Jess. It’s happening. It’s happening. It’s happening. Oh Lord. He told me not to look.
In the garden, Guy, with both front legs still in casts, sat next to Harry, providing emotional support as the prince proposed to Meghan for her hand in marriage.
In harry and meghanan interviewer asks “what position” Harry was in during the proposal, to which the prince deadpans, “Downward dog.”
“You see, it’s fun,” Meghan says, laughing.
“Of course I got down on one knee,” Harry says. “Of course I did.”
“She was down on one knee and I was like, ‘Yeah!’” Meghan adds. “She was so happy and excited. It was like, ugh, we’re making East.”

A friend, Lucy Fraser, also reveals in the documentary that the couple hosted an engagement party afterwards, during which all the guests dressed up in animal jumpsuits. Meghan and Harry wore penguin outfits, as penguins mate for life. That’s nice and all, but the real question remains unanswered: What did Guy wear?
