Here’s how to claim your share of Meta’s $725 million Cambridge Analytica class action settlement

After years of litigation over it, a federal judge recently gave initial approval to a settlement between Meta users and Facebook alleging the company shared their personal data without proper consent. If you used Facebook between May 2007 and December 2022 and lived in the US during that time, you are eligible to receive cash from the settlement. While it will take a few more months before the money begins to reach people, you don’t need to wait to file a claim.

You can start the process by visiting the settlement website and clicking or tapping the “” button at the top of the page. There’s a full set of instructions on the page, but the short version of what you need to do is provide your contact information and the email, phone number, or username associated with your Facebook account. If you have more than one account, apply for the one you’ve had the longest.

You must also complete an eligibility verification, which involves indicating whether you lived in the US between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, and whether you were a Facebook user during that same time period. Finally, you must sign the form and indicate how you want to be paid. Venmo and PayPal are options if you don’t want to share your banking information.

The deadline to submit a claim online is August 25, 2023 at 11:59 pm (Pacific Time). You may also submit a claim by mail, as long as it is postmarked by August 25, 2023. After completing the form, please make sure all information is accurate. Please note that you can only submit one claim.

If you have questions about the process, you may contact the settlement administration by emailing info@facebookuserprivacysettlement.com or by calling 1-855-566-2233. One last thing, the complaint form recommends adding “confirmation@facebookuserprivacysettlement.com” to your contact list to ensure that no important correspondence ends up in your spam folder.

The amount you can expect to receive from the settlement will depend on how many people file valid claims and how long you have been a Facebook user during the eligibility period. If everyone who can apply does, you’re looking at a payment of a few dollars at most. The final approval hearing is scheduled for September 7. Payments must be mailed after final approval is granted by the court and any appeals are resolved.
