Chelsea fans may or may not have been surprised to see Graham Potter field a four-man backline, as opposed to the three-man backline the club has worked with under Thomas Tuchel. However, they are very angry about the English coach’s decision to place César Azpilicueta as central defender alongside Thiago Silva.

Chelsea made a series of defensive reinforcements in the transfer window, with former manager Tuchel bringing in Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana. However, Potter has decided not to put either centre-back in the starting line-up for their Champions League clash against RB Salzburg.

The decision angered the Stamford Bridge faithful, who took to Twitter to criticize the manager. Here is a selection of tweets from the unhappy support:

Azpi in the CB, we are finished 💀💀

The average age of that CB association is 60 dfkm, why are we still starting Azpi ANYWHERE in 2022?

The man no longer has balls… I can’t bank Azpi in a game that he must win… one goes very well

@UTD__J Meh tbf just wants a win, it’s his first lineup so he hasn’t finished his final azpi but it makes sense for him to play his captain for game one.

Graham Potter hopes that his decision to include César Azpilicueta will be vindicated and that the team will return to winning ways. The two center backs are in their thirties, with Azpilicueta now 33 and Thiago Silva about to turn 38.

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly wrongly claims the Premier League duo went through the academy

Blues owner Todd Boehly made headlines following the sacking of Champions League-winning manager Thomas Tuchel following last week’s loss to Dinamo Zagreb. He was later criticized after speaking on the SALT forum (via Metro), where he claimed that Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne went through the club’s Cobham academy.

Anyway, this is far from the case. The Liverpool striker spent his entire youth career in Egypt, before starting out as a professional with Al Mokawloon.

From there, the forward moved to Basel, where he spent two years before joining the Blues for an initial fee of £12m. Salah eventually left Chelsea for Roma, before returning to the Premier League in 2017, where he reached new heights with Liverpool.

Manchester City midfielder De Bruyne also did not graduate from Cobham, instead playing out his youth career in his native Belgium with Genk. After successfully graduating to the first team and playing nearly 100 league games for the team, the midfielder moved to Chelsea in 2012 for just £6.7m.

After two years, De Bruyne moved to Wolfsburg before returning to the Premier League and joining City.
