Dinesh Lad, Rohit Sharma’s trainer, is disappointed with the Indian captain’s “too aggressive play” with the bat in T20I of late and feels the 35-year-old should give up his “high-risk game”.
Veteran starter Rohit Sharma, who has adopted a brand of attacking cricket in recent times, failed miserably in the high voltage India-Pakistan ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 game at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday as he was only able to score 4 runs out of 7 balls. In the T20 World Cup warm-up match against Australia, he scored just 14 runs. Also, his last half-century in T20I came against Sri Lanka in a losing effort on September 6 during the 2022 Asian Cup.

Speaking to PTI, Dinesh Lad expressed his disappointment in Rohit Sharma’s high-stakes play and said he is making a mistake by not spending more time in the middle. He stated that he wants to see Rohit as an “anchor and not a destroyer”.
“Yeah, he’s been playing a high-stakes game for quite some time, which he shouldn’t be doing. I have no idea why it is doing that. I think he is making a mistake by playing too aggressive a game,” Lad told PTI in an interview on Wednesday.
“I feel like he should spend more time in the crease and not throw away his wicket. I don’t want him to take any chances in the first six overs of the power play. He must play his normal and natural game.
“As his coach, I would like to see him as an anchor and not a destroyer who plays high-stakes games. If he stays on the wicket for a while, he will play long and useful innings. He should try to play 17-18 overs and score around 70-80 runs in every match he plays,” added Lad.
Lad further advised Rohit to approach his tackles with “controlled aggression” and reduce risky shots. He said:
“He plays too much in the air, maybe because it is sometimes needed in T20 cricket. But I would say you should go with controlled aggression. If he cuts off risky shots, he’ll do well in every game.”
He sometimes comes off cheap by playing rush shots and has to face criticism for it – Dinesh Lad on Rohit Sharma
Lad also recalled his last conversation with Rohit and said that he had advised the Indian captain to play cricket sensibly. Lad also said that Rohit Sharma will have to face criticism after he is fired while he was playing rash shots.
“The last time I spoke to him was before going to the World Cup. We don’t talk much about technique as he has played a lot of cricket for India.
“I advised him to stay in the box and play sensibly. I always want him to lead from the front and contribute the most to India’s victory. But he’s not getting the time since he’s pulling his grounds. Sometimes he comes out cheap playing snap shots and he has to face criticism for that,” he said.
Lad is also confident that the 35-year-old will bounce back strong. He too is delighted to see Rohit leading India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 and is hopeful that Men In Blue will win the World Cup under Rohit’s leadership. He elaborated:
“I am sure that Rohit will come back very strong. I feel like he should show some patience. He should spend more time in the crease. The grounds in Australia are ideal for this type of game. He is a hitting player and the ball enters the bat very well.
“In T20 cricket, it’s hard to talk much about technique. He should start to enjoy the game more and do well for the country as a player and as a captain.
“I am very happy and proud that my pupil Rohit Sharma is leading India in the T20 World Cup. Just like India won the World Cup on his World Cup debut in 2007, I would like to see him lift the World Cup on his debut as captain.”
In the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 match between India and Pakistan at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday, October 23, Virat Kohli scored 82 runs from 53 balls, including 6 fours and 4 sixes, to help India win the match by 4 .wickets.
Lad was very impressed with Kohli’s strike against Pakistan and called his innings the best T20 innings he has ever seen.
“Virat Kohli played the best T20 innings I have ever seen. The best part was that he was always in control. He never played a false or wrong shot.
“In T20 cricket, there is a lot of improvisation, reverse sweeps, scoops and so on, but Virat didn’t play any of those shots. He played proper cricket shots. This had to be the best entry from him given the magnitude and pressure situation India was in.”
Dinesh Lad further said that Rohit Sharma must try to adapt and play like a match winner again.
“I feel like Rohit will start playing like a match winner again. We are about to see the best of Rohit once again, like the 2019 World Cup in England.”
“He has won five IPL titles. He is an involved captain. He is confident in himself. He knows how to get the best out of which player and how to use the best of them.
“Our chances of lifting the World Cup have increased as the momentum is with us. The momentum is in India’s favor after their thrilling win over Pakistan on Sunday,” he added.
