Cricket West Indies (CWI) on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, announced the 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2022, which did not include T20 legend Andre Russell. This tournament will be played in Australia from October 16 in seven cities of the country.
Nicholas Pooran will lead the two-time T20 World Champions in an ICC event for the first time, while Rowman Powell has been appointed as his deputy.
There is no place in the squad for all-rounder Andre Russell, who last featured for the West Indies in last year’s T20 World Cup in the UAE. However, Eoin Lewis, who also played for the Men in Maroons in the tournament, has been recalled after missing almost a year due to fitness issues.
Fabian Allen, who is on a break from cricket due to family reasons, was not considered and leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr was also left out of the squad. Instead of Walsh, the CWI selectors looked for uncapped Yannick Kyriah, who made his West Indies debut during the ODI series against New Zealand last month.
Another uncapped player selected is left-handed batting all-rounder, Ramon Reffer.
West Indies will play Scotland in their qualifying round opener.
Unfortunately, the West Indies team has not directly qualified for the main draw and will have to play the first qualifying round to make it to the Super 12 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.
They will take on Scotland in the first of three Group B fixtures played at Bellerive Oval in Hobart, Tasmania. And next, they will face Zimbabwe on October 19 and then Ireland on October 21, with the top two teams from Group B entering the Super 12, along with the top two teams from Group A, Sri Lanka, United UAE, Netherlands and Namibia.
“We have selected a mix of youth and experience to represent West Indies. In the selection process, we have been aware of the ongoing CPL and we are looking at players who are playing very well. I I said at the start of my tenure that I’m interested in giving players a chance and I think I’m working on that consistently. I believe it’s a very good team that we’ve picked. And this is a team that will compete, because we have to qualify for the Super 12 from Round 1,” he said. said Desmond Haynes, CWI’s lead selector.
Before the start of T20 World Cup 2022, West Indies will play a two-match T20I series against Australia in Gold Coast on October 5 and Brisbane on October 7.
