Former Pakistan multipurpose Mohammad Hafeez has lamented the way Shoaib Malik has been treated lately. After being passed over for the 2022 Asia Cup, Malik, 40, was unable to make the national team for the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be played later this year in Australia.

Earlier this year, in January, Hafeez announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket. The veteran said he had advised Malik to retire at the time.

Mohammad Hafeez credits Shoaib Malik with maintaining top-level fitness for over two decades

Hafeez praised Malik for maintaining a high level of fitness and playing top-level cricket for more than two decades. Malik made his international debut in 1999 and last donned the green suit in November 2021 against Bangladesh.

In 35 tests, 287 ODIs and 124 T20Is, the dynamic right-hander scored 1898, 7534 and 2435 respectively, comprising 12 centuries and 61 half-centuries.

“When I retired, I told Malik to retire too because I knew he would not be respected, as was also evident in my case. I understood that he wanted a last stand but cricket is that cruel,” he added.

Shoaib Malik deserves a proper farewell, believes Mohammad Hafeez

Malik last represented Pakistan in ODI cricket in 2019 during the World Cup in England and Wales. Hafeez, who also played in the tournament, felt that the PCB should have organized a farewell match for Malik three years ago.
