After losing the first Test at Lord’s by an innings and 12 runs, England made a brilliant comeback in the series. They returned to Manchester to win the second Test by an innings and 85 runs, making the third and final Test a very interesting one. The match got off to an inauspicious start as the first day was lost due to rain and the second day of the Test match had to be called off due to the death of England’s Queen Elizabeth II.
Finally, as the Test began on the third day of the match, England captain Ben Stokes, after winning the toss and electing to field, asked Dean Elgar and South Africa to bat first. Ollie Robinson took 49/5 with the red ball, while Stuart Broad surpassed Glenn McGrath’s record for the most Test wickets by a fast bowler with 4/41.
South Africa were bowled out for 118, with Marco Johnson leading the way with 30.
Despite Marco Johnson taking five wickets, England came back to win by 9 wickets
South Africa then did their best to restrict England to 158 with Ollie Pope taking 67, Marco Johnson 5/35 and Kagiso Rabada taking four wickets. This slender lead of 40 runs proved crucial as the South African batting struggled in the second innings as well.
