India National Cricket Team wicket-keeper and batsman, 37-year-old Dinesh Karthik, has opined that leading leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal would have “caused a lot more damage” had he been part of India’s playing XI at the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Chahal, 32, was part of India’s World Cup squad but did not appear in the playing XI for the entire tournament, with India giving preference to Ravichandran Ashwin as the first-choice spinner.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik discussed Chahal’s absence from India’s playing XI at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.
The veteran goalkeeper-batsman, who was also part of India’s World Cup squad, said spinner Ravichandran Ashwin started the competition very well but did not finish well. He added that Chahal could have been an “interesting choice.”
“All these are calls that are taken by the captain and the coach with the belief that they had in a certain player. To be fair, Ashwin started the tournament well, but it probably didn’t end well. But Chahal would definitely have done a lot more damage, he could have been an interesting pick. But hindsight is a very interesting thing to see once the results are out,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

If we look at the big picture of the World Cup, the Asian Cup, we expect much better from India – Dinesh Karthik
Karthik further said that the expectations of the Indian team were very high in multinational tournaments but they did not meet.
“Overall, if we look at the big picture of the World Cup and the Asian Cup, we expect much better from the India team and that’s the right way to say it,” he said.
Notably, India failed to qualify for the 2022 Asian Cup final after facing losses against Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the Super 4 stage of the tournament. Furthermore, India faced a humiliating 10-wicket defeat against England in the semi-final to be knocked out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.
Meanwhile, India will kick off their 2023 with a white ball series against Sri Lanka at home. Sri Lanka’s tour of India 2023 consists of three ODIs and three T20Is. The T20I will be played on January 3, 5 and 7 in Mumbai, Pune and Rajkot respectively. The ODIs will be played on January 10, 12 and 15 in Guwahati, Kolkata and Trivandrum respectively.
