IPL 2023 auction: “It would be great if they picked him up in the IPL, it would be amazing” – Brendon McCullum on Rehan Ahmed

England National Cricket Team red ball head coach Brendon McCullum, who shattered the first century in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the opening match of the tournament itself, wants 18-year-old Rehan Ahmed bag a deal in the upcoming IPL 2023 auction.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) Player Auction 2023, which will be a mini-auction, will be held on December 23 in Kochi. Ahmed has set the base price for him at INR 40 lakh for the IPL mini-auction.

Rehan Ahmed made his international debut in the third and final Test match of the series against the Pakistan National Cricket Team led by Babar Azam at the National Stadium in Karachi. The 18-year-old became the youngest to take a five-wicket haul on his Test debut when he ended his spell with figures of 14.5-1-48-5 in Pakistan’s second innings. Overall, he claimed impressive figures of 7/137 on his Test debut.

Meanwhile, Brendon McCullum, who played 109 IPL matches and scored 2880 runs, said that an IPL franchise pick Ahmed would be great and amazing.

“It would be great if they picked him up in the IPL. It would be amazing if he did,” McCullum told the BBC’s Test Match Special on Tuesday.

McCullum further said that Ahmed is a “fully-fledged international cricketer” and they will have to look after him. The 41-year-old also said he would encourage the leggy youngster to play as much franchise cricket as possible.

“Why not give him a chance to rub shoulders with other players and collect those experiences? What other 18 year old is going to have those opportunities? He is a fully fledged international cricketer. The important thing now is that we continue to take care of him,” said the former New Zealand skipper.

“I will encourage him to play as much franchise cricket and get as much experience around the world and play with different players, under different coaches and under different conditions.”
