On Monday, San Francisco’s Jimmy Garoppolo epic took over unexpected turn. Instead of trading the two-time Super Bowl champion, as many people expected, the 49ers chose to keep Garoppolo, restructuring his contract to make him the highest-paid backup in the NFL. For most people, this move will be a no-brainer, something they think about once and then forget completely. After all, Trey Lance has always been the man in San Francisco this year. However, for fans of the 49er Rita Carvalho, better known online as Rita OKThis decision means everything.
Carvalho has gained a huge number of followers online by “drawing Jimmy J every day so he trades”. Every morning, like clockwork, a new message would appear on its feed for Garoppolo in a different outfit, stacked up in a different movie, meme, or pop culture reference, and although the Garoppolo trade schedule has been indefinitely put on hold, the Carvalho vows to continue her commitment a little.
“After thinking about the pros and cons, and talking to my friend about whether or not we’re going to do it, I think it still makes sense for me to keep drawing Garoppolo,” Carvalho told Deadspin. “As long as I can make people happy, I will continue to do so.”
Garoppolo’s drawings for Carvalho began in early February, during the middle of the MLB shutdown period. This is actually where her drawings were inspired by. See, at the start of the lockout, Reddit user u/DidItForTheStory started his own thread called “Draw Mike Trout every day until the lock ends. It lasted for 96 days, and ranged from awful AL MVP photos three times to Trout disguised as Kim Kardashian. The posts were hugely popular, getting thousands of upvotes every day. Carvalho saw how happy she was for people to make these sketches, and proceeded to start her own series, and after posting a few of her own pictures, a few strangers on the internet convinced her to start a series after Garoppolo’s commercial saga. Each drawing takes about 1-2 hours to complete, sometimes it depends more on the details of the image and/or how many other players will be in the image along with Garoppolo.
“We wanted to celebrate what Garoppolo has done for this team,” said Carvalho. “My first official was kind of just a ‘thank you’ message showing how grateful we are for everything he did for the team. I was kind of sad to see him go.”
Fortunately, Carvalho won’t have to see Garoppolo go, at least not in the near future now. However, this makes its work more difficult. Carvalho claimed that when she started this project, ideas came to her easily.
“We didn’t do anything, so any reference we could think of seemed like good ideas.”
Now, with days running into the hundreds, she had to solicit ideas from her community more often. Carvalho thinks this is where some of her best ideas came from. to her Today 209 Graphic – Posted on August 30, the morning after details of Jimmy G’s new contract were released, ending any trade rumors – Garoppolo portrayed as Jordan Belfort in wolf of wall street screaming famous quote”I will not leave! Show continues!“A signal to all of her fans that neither she nor Jimmy J is going anywhere anytime soon. This idea came to her from a fan.
“I got someone on Reddit actually texting me and asking me to do this idea, but I never did. At the time, we all thought it was going to get traded, so I never did. But I think everything happens for a reason. When I decided I And my friend that we’d go on, we thought OK, that’s our perfect reference. It fits right in,” Carvalho said.
When Carvalho was asked about her favorite drawings from the series, she said that her drawings are from Calvin and Hobbes – Today 169 George Keitel’s portrayal as Hobbes has emerged reminding Calvin/Garoppolo to value the good in life before it fades away.
“That message of appreciating things was important to me, because I think we only appreciate things when they’re gone. I think this brought something different to the drawing. This one is my favorite.”
Carvalho will surely appreciate the 49ers while they are as good as they are. She and her boyfriend, who turned Carvalho into a 49ers fan three years ago, think the team is ready for the Super Bowl in 2022. When asked what she expects from the team this season, Carvalho said, “This year we can make it to the Super Bowl. We have two stars.” QBs. There is no excuse. We have to make it far.”
As a fan of the 49ers, I certainly hope that’s the case as well. Even if they disappoint, 49ers fans everywhere will still be able to go online and watch a new drawing of Garoppolo every morning. Hopefully it makes this season more bearable should anything go wrong.
