Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will continue with Hollywood’s most underrated franchise

The recent Planet of the Apes trilogy is one of the most consistently funny and thoughtful reruns of blockbuster franchises in recent memory. Getting off to a low-key start with the 2011 Rupert Wyatt movie Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, the series took off when the batman director Matt Reeves took the baton for 2014 Sunrise from the planet of the apes and 2017 War for the planet of the apes with a low-key take on post-apocalyptic action that never lost sight of humanity in its story about a burgeoning ape society.

Turns out their story isn’t over: kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, “an entirely new chapter in the ‘Planet of the Apes’ saga” will go into production next month. According to 20th Century Studios, the story will continue many years after the conclusion of War for the planet of the apesbut no plot details beyond that have been revealed yet.

kingdom of the planet of the apes will star Owen Teague (It’s), Freya Alan (The Wizard), and Peter Macon (the orville), and will be directed by Wes Bell (known for the Maze Runner movies but also for the sadly canned animated adaptation of mouse guard). While this sounds like a changing of the guard, two of the screenplay’s writers, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, worked on the first two movies, and were joined by Josh Friedman and Patrick Aison (the latter of whom wrote the excellent Prey).

Unfortunately, there’s no mention of the one thing that helped make the new ape trilogy a success: Weta Digital’s work bringing the apes to life, which included an all-time great performance from Andy Serkis as the leader of the apes. , Cease. That’s not to say the film can’t be good with another cast and cast, they’re just the biggest shoes to fill, the kind of things that will help or hinder the narrative ambitions of a film like this.
