Legend of Vox Machina Season 2 & 3 Plans Revealed at NYCC

At the end of Critical Role’s The Legend of Vox Machina season 1 (animated by Titmouse Animation), the merry and messy Vox Machina gang restored sunshine and justice to Percy’s home kingdom of Whitewood. But upon returning home to his base realm of Emon, a force of dragons, called the Chroma Conclave, descended upon the region. And in season 2, the gang will have to face more than just dragons, according to the cast, who reunited at the 2022 New York Comic Con.

Vox Machina’s motley crew includes the half-elves archer twins Vax (Liam O’Brien) and Vex Vessar (Laura Bailey), the barbarian goliath Grog Strongjaw (Travis Willingham), the gnome bard Scanlan Shorthalt (Sam Riegel), the gnome clergyman Pike Trickfoot (Ashley Johnson), insecure druid Keyleth (Marisha Ray), and troubled gunslinger Percy de Rolo (Taliesin Jaffe). Foul-mouthed, drunk, and morally gray, they’re easy to underestimate, but they get the job done. Main cast and original Critical Role Dungeon Master, Matthew Mercer (who voices several roles and will voice more next season), led the NYCC conversation on what to expect from Season 2, which is coming in January 2023.

Where are the characters in Vox Machina season 2

The panel kicked off with a clip of Scanlan singing a rap song that sums up all of season 1. More music is confirmed for season 2, and Scanlan the bard doesn’t sing it exclusively. “There is a song in season 2 that I am very proud of. It’s very sweet and also very stupid. I worked my ass off singing,” Reigel said. “Several people on this stage will be able to sing in season 2.”

Will the sex-loving rebel Scanlan find love? Riegel revealed: “It will evolve a little bit. He is a cuckold and a dumb singer. In this upcoming season, he will be a mature singer and a horndog. He finds out that he doesn’t just want to connect anyway. he may not find it [love]. He might find love in a place we wouldn’t expect.”

Vex and Vax’s ride-or-die brotherly relationship may falter. According to O’Brien, “That is going to be questioned. They will have to grow out of each other and with each other.”

“And face the trauma together,” Bailey added with brotherly energy. Bailey promised “the moment she [Vex] break [her emotional] walls… It’s my favorite moment of the season.” O’Brien also vaguely teased “an upgrade” for Vex.

Johnson said that Pike and Grog’s friendship will also be tested, but “I can’t say what it is about.” She shared that “Pike heals more, possibly. And maybe, there is some singing. His personal journey with Everlight continues.” Last season, Pike went through a crisis of faith and temporarily parted ways with the group to win it back. This time, “He’s definitely sticking around a bit this time… Maybe we can meet some people from Pike’s past.”

Unpacking Pike’s past in Season 2 means his best friend Grog will also have his story revealed. Williamson said that “Grog is always looking for the newest and fastest way to power him up to protect his friends. We’ll start to see elements of his backstory, who Grog is, and why he’s the way he is.”

Now that fans have seen all of Percy’s not-so-pretty Whitewood story, Jaffe shared what happened to Percy after his traumatic return home: “Percy will spend some time trying to figure out the best way to feel ashamed and ashamed of everything. . ever has. There seems to be no end to the lingering trauma of his last trip. “Percy will make a series of particularly dire decisions that will negatively affect everyone. That’s character growth!”

Speaking of Percy’s trauma, Mercer marked the campaign of the Briarwood arc as “the moment when the vox machine the narrative became personal, and the stakes were dark and real. He went from frivolous fun to accessible trauma, the thirst for revenge…a dark place. That was the moment when we all realized in our campaign that we could go into these deep, dark human places as artists.”

Meanwhile, Keyleth is growing like his vines. Ray joked, “I’m very excited about the growth of their relationships. You know, plural…” The crowd cheered before she added, “It’s probably not as dramatic as you think.”

The legend of Vox Machina 3?

So what will Vox Machina be up against with these new winged terrors on the horizon? Mercer exposed for those who are not familiar with the campaign: “[The Conclave] it is a group of dragons that have formed a union that has its own tension and dynamic. It is a serious threat to Exandria and we can see how the world in general deals with it and how [Vox Machina] wrestle with the idea of responsibility which is quite unexpected.”

Adapting a meaty bow with the Conclave was a challenge. Then Reigel dropped this bombshell: “Trying to fit it into a single season is a daunting task. We were trying to find out if it was possible. Fortunately, we got the green light for season 3.” Amid applause from the crowd, Reigel informed them that they expected the Conclave arc to extend into Season 3.

“There are delicious dark moments in Season 2,” Mercer joked. “I am excited that the vox machine The story begins to enter the realm where stories are personal and they enter a space that is cosmic and their destinies intertwine with elements of the world that are larger than themselves.”

Willingham added: “The action scenes are crazier. We’re taking it to a whole new level. Season 1 was just a warm up. Now you get Vox Machina, what is their trauma and how are they going to resolve it. When we launched it, Amazon said ‘did it happen like this? [in the Critical Role source material]?’ and I said, ‘damn.’

The panel also previewed an exclusive clip from season 2 that picks up where season 1 left off, with dragons attacking the realm and Vox Machina fleeing the chaos. As the clip concluded, Reigel joked, “Right after that clip, Mario comes in and says, ‘What, I’m Chris Pratt?’ Sorry Sorry.”
