Those labels would apply to whatever happens on the Chicago White Sox field, and most fans would prefer it to be limited to that. They started 6-9, half their lineup is rotating stints on the disabled list just like last season (along with Joe Kelly, who got hurt running into the camera he thought was closest), they have two starters they can take out. Anyone, and maybe not a reliever who can either.
But being a mediocre to bad baseball team isn’t enough for the White Sox, and it never really has been. So they gave the world this on Friday night:
And, of course, Mike Clevinger, apparently forming an exploratory committee to seek the nomination for World’s Biggest Asshole, had a concise answer when asked about it by Paul Sullivan of the Tribune after the game.
Given what we know about Clevinger, it’s not a huge surprise that he’s trying to concoct some kind of middle finger for everyone in his first home start, because he hasn’t exactly hit the type to take responsibility for anything or show any kind of mouth. Your choice of “Gold Digger” is on the mark.
What’s sickening is that there has to be at least a couple layers of approval from above him where someone, anyone could have told Clevinger and the game day operations team that this might not be the best look for this one. player, which Red Sox fans would see. Still, he would like to be left on the sidewalk to make his home debut. You’d also think that some media training might have gone through the cinder block that is Clevinger’s head that he might want to do anything to avoid further alienating fans thanks to himself making quite a few fans feel pretty embarrassed to see him and the Sox But hey, pretty much everything about the Sox signing Clevinger and everything that came after has made the club look like the bumbling second-rate team that seemingly, desperately, they want to be
It’s also apparently no less strange and unsightly inside the Sox clubhouse:
Colas only made his MLB debut this season, and perhaps no one on the Sox’s public relations or human resources team has taken him through any social media training yet. Or maybe it’s just a shed light on what Clevinger’s teammates already think of him. Or maybe it’s exactly how it seems. Whatever it is, it definitely makes you want to shower after watching it.
