Just weeks into his offseason, star third baseman Nolan Arenado informed the St. Louis Cardinals that he would opt for 2023 and beyond.
The slugger’s contract expires after the 2027 season.
The team recently signed Willson Contreras to a five-year, $87.5 million contract, securing his replacement for Yadier Molina.
But given Arenado’s option to opt out of the remaining five years of his contract, there could be something else planned in St. Louis.
On a local St. Louis radio show, MLB Network member and avid Cardinals fan Greg Amsinger made a strong sales pitch for any player who wants to play in St. Louis, explaining that there is some appeal to the city.
How unexpected was it that Arenado opted in just before an explosive FA market?@MLBNetwork main presenter Greg Amsinger joined #The opening to explain how Arenado’s decision is a sign of the Cardinals’ team building plan moving forward.

The appeal of St. Louis
Amsinger went on to say that St. Louis doesn’t necessarily have to compete with the biggest market teams in terms of payroll, given high television ratings and sold-out crowds.
The MLB Network analyst cited the adoration fans have for his team as a reason players want to join the Cardinals, and why Arenado opted out when he had a chance to secure a bigger deal. .
In that case, there could be more for the Cardinals this offseason.
The team still needs a left-handed bat and a starting pitcher, and there are many avenues they could explore.
But beyond that, Amsinger’s sales pitch on the Cardinals is pretty much on point and could ultimately lead to other players signing with the team as the offseason progresses.
