no man’s sky receives a major new update alongside its release on Nintendo Switch on Friday. The update, called Waypoint, brings the game to version 4.0 and makes a radical overhaul of the game’s balance and structure, though it doesn’t add much new content.
Developer Hello Games said Waypoint is designed to help new and returning gamers make sense of a game that’s had 21 major updates in the six years since its initial release, and to give Switch gamers an experience more than “pick up and play”. It also has a focus on improving the quality of life for dedicated no man’s sky community.
There is a new Relaxed Mode that aims for a simplified, faster and less complicated way to see the sights and features of this vast space exploration game. Custom game modes allow survival, crafting, combat, controls, and accessibility settings to be tailored to each player’s style of play.
Long-term players will benefit from a revised inventory system that greatly increases level caps for ships, weapons, and players, as well as a new milestone system, new collectibles, and improved mission content.
And if you played like me no man’s sky years ago and you’re intimidated by the idea of returning to a long-forgotten save game plus a host of new systems, a new information portal will break down all of your progress and objectives.
There is more to pore over in the full Waypoint patch notes.
