Odell Beckham Jr. comes for Nike–The legal way! He claims the sportswear company suppressed sales of shoes that would have earned him a contract extension. As a result, OBJ estimates that Nike was left with more than $20 million out of their pockets. According to tmz Sports, Odell’s attorney, Daniel Davillier, filed a lawsuit against Nike to collect his client’s alleged coins.
The lawsuit reveals that Odell considered switching sports retailers to Adidas when his contract with Nike expired in 2017. Instead, Nike opted to match Adidas’s offer, which was allegedly a HUGE contract, rather than lose Odell.
Now, Beckham Jr. says the fine print in Nike’s offer differs from what Adidas offered. He says Nike’s contract structure made it “impossible to activate very valuable extensions of the agreement”, by TMZ. Odell issued a statement about the lawsuit.
“Being a Nike athlete and brand icon was a dream I had since I was a kid. He wanted to be the next Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, LeBron James or Kobe Bryant in the Nike family. When Nike exercised its preemptive right to match Adidas’ offer and not only kept me as a Nike athlete but also made me one of its brand icons, my dream came true,” said OBJ. “Unfortunately, Nike did not fulfill its commitments. Throughout our partnership, I have kept my promise and met my obligations to the brand. I am extremely disappointed that we had to take these steps to ensure that Nike lives up to its obligations and promises.”
The relationship with Nike began to unravel in March
OBJ claims that the relationship with Nike began to unravel in March 2022 after the shoe company shortened his paycheck. Instead of paying OBJ the $2.6 million he expected, the retailer allegedly withheld $2 million of the funds without notice.
Odell says he later learned Nike withheld the money because he violated his contract by tampering with his shoes and gloves last season. However, the Los Angeles Rams player insists that he was forced to customize his Nike shoes because the retailer failed to provide shoes that matched the colors of his new team.
He added that he always customizes his gloves to maintain his “high fashion brand” look and that Nike hasn’t objected in the past. In his statement, Odell said that he is “take a position” for himself and for “Setting a precedent for all athletes who have dedicated their lives to the sport they love.”
“We are responsible for meeting our obligations under our contracts, but we also have to hold powerful companies like Nike accountable for meeting their commitments,” OBJ said.
The lawsuit says Odell believes Nike added the penalties to pressure him into signing a lesser deal with them. In his statement, the athlete said the lawsuit will also set a precedent for athletes who “They don’t have the means to defend themselves.”
Odell also asked that questions be referred to his attorney Daniel, but not before clarifying his intention to shed light on athletes and their rights.
“I look forward to solving this issue and hopefully we can start a real conversation about protecting athletes and their rights,” Odell said. “This happens all too often in the sports industry and it’s time for a change.”
