Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed his condolences on the death of former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, saying he was one of the outstanding statesmen of the 20th century who left an indelible mark in the course of history.
Russian media reported that Gorbachev died in a Moscow hospital on Tuesday at the age of 91 after a “serious and prolonged illness”. His death led to an outpouring of condolences and praise from leaders around the world.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of His Excellency Mr. Mikhail Gorbachev, one of the eminent statesmen of the 20th century who left an indelible mark on the course of history,” Prime Minister Modi said in a tweet.

Gorbachev was the leader of the Soviet Union from 1985 until its collapse in 1991. He visited India in 1986 as well as in 1988.
Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating a landmark nuclear weapons treaty with then-US President Ronald Reagan.
