Scarlet Pokemon Y Violet still has effort valueseither electric vehiclesa complex stat system that changes depending on the Pokémon you fight.
Increasing EVs can be tricky, but it’s worth it as it will significantly increase your Pokemon’s stats.
What are electric vehicles?
EVs or Effort Values are stats that your Pokémon gain from defeating or catching specific Pokémon. Pokémon can gain 510 EVs in total, with a maximum of 252 per stat; 4 EVs are rounded up to a one point increase for a specific stat.
By defeating multiple Pokemon, your Pokemon will gain passive stats. Competitive players will min these to specifically benefit Pokemon by typically allocating 252 EVs to two valuable stats and the remaining four to another stat. (There are other EV differentials that are used for specific builds and Pokemon, but running 252/252/4 is the most common.)
Essentially, you can significantly increase your Pokemon’s stats by having it fight specific Pokemon until their EVs are at max.
You can check the EVs of your Pokemon by opening their summary menu and pressing the L trigger on their stats screen. The solid color shape will show the EVs. Stats with maxed EV will shine.

How do I EV train Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?
This is what we do with the EV train:
- Put a powerful Pokémon that has max EVs or stats we don’t care about at the front of the party.
- Fill the rest of the party with Pokemon that need the same EV. (For example, we had Gholdengo, Kirlia, Charcadet, Tatsugiri, and Toedscool, since we were training them for Speed.)
- Give each of the EV Training Pokemon their respective stat boost item. (See section on power items below.)
- Eat a sandwich that increases the encounter rate of the target Pokémon.
- Exclusively battle the target Pokémon that gives the desired EVs until the EVs are maxed out. This requires 28 Pokemon using our provided targets and items.
Our party looked like this:

The Pokemon we battle with, along with their provided locations and EVs are as follows:
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet EV Training Goals
GO | Pokemon | Location | recommended sandwich |
---|---|---|---|
GO | Pokemon | Location | recommended sandwich |
HP | Paldean Wooper, Azurill, Lechonk | Southern Province (Area One) | Ham Sandwich (#80) |
Attack | Yungoos and Shinx | Southern Province (Area Three) | Avocado Sandwich (#44) |
Defending | Taruntula and Scatterbug | Southern Province (Area One) | Ham Butter (#1) |
special attack | psyduck | Southern Province (Area One) | Spicy Sandwich (#56) |
Special Defense | speak | Southern Province (Area Three) | Smoked Sandwich (#92) |
Speed | Fledgling and Fletchling | Southern Province (Area One) | Egg Sandwich (#60) |
We ate the sandwiches listed in the table above, but any sandwich that increases the encounter rate for the Pokemon type will work.
Each of these Pokémon grants one EV per KO or capture, but you can increase this significantly by allowing your Pokémon to have power items. With a power item, your Pokémon will instead gain nine EVs per KO or capture of the previous pokemon. Each Pokémon in your party will gain EVs due to the permanently activated Exp. Share.
You do not get electric vehicles from auto battles.
What do power items do and where can I get them?
Power items reduce the speed of the Pokémon holding them, but increase the EV gain for a specific stat depending on the item.
You can buy items of power for $10,000 each at delibird presents from the “General Merchandise” section. They correspond to the following statistics:
- Power Bracelet: Attack
- Belt of Power: Defending
- power lens: special attack
- power band: Special Defense
- power weight: HP
- Power Anklet: Speed
How do I get rid of electric vehicles?
The party you won the game with is likely to have random EVs just from fighting whatever comes your way. You can clean your Pokemon using some specific types of berries.
Each of these berries reduces the Pokémon’s EVs by 10 in the specified stat and makes it friendlier:
- pomeg: Reduces HP
- kelpsia: Decreases attack
- qualot: Decreases Defense
- Sling: Decreases Special Attack
- hands: Decreases Special Defense
- Tomatoes: It decreases the velocity
You can find these berries as shiny items on the ground, but the best place to get them is at the Porto Marinade auction. Randomly one of the NPCs will sell over 50 of these berries at a time – you can snag a ton in one go to help clean up your beloved Pokemon’s stats.
