Ranji Trophy: Railways vs Punjab to be restarted after Karnail Singh Pitch was declared dangerous and unsuitable

The Ranji Trophy Match between Railways and Punjab was being played at the Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi. There were many uneven rebounds and on the first day of the match, a total of 24 wickets fell, of which 20 wickets were taken by the speedsters.

It will not be wrong to say that the grass became a minefield where scoring was not easy. Punjab were bowled out for 162 runs in the first innings while Railways were out for 150 runs. in response to that, Punjab lost 4 wickets and managed to score 18 runs before the end of Day 1.

Railways vs Punjab match to be restarted

The referees have decided to restart the match indicating that the field of play is dangerous and unsafe for the batsmen. The railway team official had an interaction with the media and made interesting comments in the field. “They could have repaired the surface and resumed on the third day from where the match was stopped, but the match officials decided to play on a new surface. We were in a fantastic position, but we will possibly lose the chance to win because of this decision.” said the Railway Officer.

“The pitch was uneven. Some balls hit the gloves, others slid into the shoes from the same spot. It was a green wicket but the match officials decided it was too uneven and inconsistent for play to continue.” said one player.

Concerns over Karnail Singh Stadium

Karnail Stadium has received much criticism as its surfaces have been described as poor. In 2012, Karnail Stadium was banned from hosting matches for a period of 2 years, as the committee found that a racy wicket was deliberately made by curators to help the Railways.

It would not be wrong to say that due to such pitches, a batsman’s morale goes down as we all know that in India there is fierce competition for places. This Ranji Trophy season is quite pivotal for the likes of Sarfaraz Khan and Ajinkya Rahane as the duo would be looking forward to playing in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023 in February.
