Pakistan national cricket team led by Babar Azam lost by 23 runs against Sri Lankan national cricket team led by Dasan Shanaka in the final of Asia Cup 2022 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, September 11.

Pakistan’s national cricket team won the toss and continued the tradition of ‘winning the toss and bowling first’. Pakistan’s fast bowlers got off to a flying start in the match as they destroyed Sri Lanka’s top-order batting unit and the Dasan Shanaka-led side collapsed to 58/5.

In the end, Sri Lanka managed to put 170/6 on the board thanks to the sensational batting of Bhanuka Rajapakse, who scored 71 runs off 45 balls, which included 6 fours and 3 sixes. Also, Venindu Hasaringa (36) and Dhananjaya de Silva (28) contributed brilliantly.

Chasing the target, Pakistan lost the wickets of out-of-form batsmen Babar Azam (5) and Fakhar Zaman (0) within the first six overs and were 37/2 at the end of the Powerplay.

However, Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed batted cautiously and put on a partnership of 71 runs in 59 balls. In the end, Pakistan lost wickets intermittently and were bowled out for 147 runs.

During the post-match presentation ceremony, Pakistan national cricket team captain Babar Azam said that they dominated Sri Lanka in the first 8 overs but the partnership between Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Venindu Hasaringa and Chamika Karunaratne proved to be the game changer. He said:

Congratulations to Sri Lanka for playing brilliant cricket. We dominated them for the first eight overs but the partnership that Rajapakse got was amazing. It was a real wicket and it’s always nice to play in Dubai.

Babar Azam further said that he did not bat as per his potential and he gave 15-20 extra runs in the bowling department. At the same time, he admitted that Pakistan’s fielding was poor. He asserted:

We didn’t bat to our potential. We started well, but we gave away 15-20 extra runs and couldn’t finish well. Lots of positives for us. Finally, the margin for errors is small. Our fielding was not right and the batting didn’t finish it well either. But Rizwan, Naseem and Nawaz were positive. There will be ups and downs, but if we make fewer mistakes, it will be good.”
