In a statement that’s both slightly bizarre and quintessential Tom Cruise, the 60-year-old actor opens up a behind-the-scenes video to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One saying that he has wanted to do what they are about to show “since he was a little kid.” Namely, the movie’s biggest and most dangerous stunt: a motorcycle jump off a Norwegian cliff, then launch into a BASE jump.

After blinking as many times as it takes to process little Tommy Cruise imagining death-defying jumps for fun, the stunt’s impressive reach sinks in as Cruise, reckon dead Writer-director Christopher McQuarrie and his elaborate stunt team detail the intense amount of prep work involved in stunt work. The “prep work” in this context requires a truly astonishing amount of skydiving on Cruise’s part, including some jumps he does “just to warm up” when it finally comes time to film the big stunt.

As the consummate movie star, Tom Cruise approaches movie promotion with clinical efficiency, flashing his megawatt smile and talking about how great it is to entertain us moviegoers because movies are simply The Best. He’s as good at this as he is at not talking about Scientology (read: extremely), but 21st Century Tom is also a reserved Tom, here to do a job and do it well.

Not here: Tom Cruise is having Very funny getting ready for this stunt, appearing as if East it’s what he really wants to do with his career: not make movies, but come up with crazy stunts, and then use his considerable power and influence in Hollywood to allow him to spend a couple of months doing said stunts. In exchange, he’ll give the money people a movie, I guess. (His director of him has mild panic attacks every time he jumps out of a plane).

Jumping out of planes is so completely Tom Cruise’s love language that it’s how he chose to thank fans for their support. top gun: maverick, casually stepping out of a plane thousands of feet over South Africa while giddily addressing the camera about how entertaining us all is “the honor of a lifetime.”

If there is a god, Tom Cruise is going to piss them off one day.
