Suryakumar Yadav Opens Up About His Toughest Time On The Cricket Ground

Suryakumar Yadav has been a sensation this year and has established himself as an international T20 phenomenon. Many have labeled him “the next Villiers AB” because of his ability to play ground shots. The Indian batsman has called his half century a counter-attack against South Africa during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Perth as the most career-defining shot to date.

India won the toss and elected to bat first but were cut to 49-5 in nine overs as Lungi Ngidi (4-29) wreaked havoc. SKY was the only Indian batsman looking comfortable at the wicket, scoring 68 off 40 balls with six fours and three sixes as India set a target of 133/9. The 31-year-old felt the surface just 15 minutes before the game against South Africa.

Practice pitches were fast – Suryakumar Yadav

In an interview with The Indian Express, the 32-year-old claimed that being positive was the only way to survive on the Perth pitch, which he described as the toughest he has ever played on.

“I think half a century against South Africa in Perth was the decisive blow for me. It was the most challenging terrain I have faced to date. Before the game, I went to bat in the nets for 15 minutes and I had the feeling of Perth right there.” he told The Indian Express in an exclusive.

“The practice pitches were fast. So I faced just 15 balls and I told Vicky paaji (hitting coach Vikram Rathod) that I’m done for today, whatever batting is done will be done in the match.”

Suryakumar said about his thoughts when he went out to fight India on all sorts of issues. “When I came in to bat, I said to myself ki yeh pitch toh sochne se bhi jyada tez hai (this pitch is faster than I thought). So when I got to the non-forward end, I kept thinking about what shots I could play, since there was rebound as well. When we were 49 for 5, we had nothing to lose. We could have done it all for 75, but I decided to take the positive route.”

The 31-year-old has been in excellent form for India. He has scored 1,164 runs at an average of 46.56 and a strike rate of 187.43 in 31 T20Is this year. Suryakumar is the top run scorer for T20I in 2022, with two hundred, nine fifty and a best score of 117.
