Fashion always walks the fine line between utilitarian and decorative. On the one hand, we all need to get dressed (unless you’re in the nude look). But on the other hand, we don’t necessarily “need” an item this season, or we don’t have to subscribe to every trend. But despite the lack of necessity, for many, style plays a pivotal role in how they express themselves, how they cultivate joy, and even in how they support communities of color. Absurdity may seem like an important part of fashion, but in all honesty, what you choose to buy and how much you buy is the easiest way that you, as a consumer, can (literally) demonstrate your values.
Therefore, it is imperative that you shop on purpose and discern trends that are worth your time. And while the choice falls on you, I’d be remiss if I didn’t share at least one recent trend that’s worthwhile: belts. While this accessory has always been a staple of any wardrobe, the fall/winter 2022 runways have taken them from realism to perfection and back again. It wasn’t just about her wearing low rise pants; It was all about using design to elevate this staple.
Belts were able to tie function and fashion together in a way that no other rule could. And to prove the point, I surveyed the runway to show 5 ways the belts were designed this season. Whether you’re looking for inspiration for how to wear your belt in new ways or want to give the basics a little extra, at the end of this story, I can guarantee you’ll totally indulge in the trend.
