Serena Williams, 40, played her second US Open on August 31 after announcing her retirement – and several famous faces were in the crowd. Tiger’s attendance at the match isn’t surprising as he and Serena have been close friends for years. Williams’ younger sister even mentioned Tiger in a personal article about her plans to “evolve” away from her sports Vogue magazine advance this month. “I said, ‘I don’t know what to do: I think I’m over it, but maybe I’m not over it yet [tennis],” she wrote. “He is a tiger, and he was adamant that I should be a beast as he is! He said: Serena, what if you only give her two weeks? You don’t have to commit to anything. You just have to go out to the field every day for two weeks and give your all to see what happens. I said, “Well, I think I can do that.”
And although many call it retirement, the professional tennis player was adamant that she was not a fan of that word. “I’ve never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something specific and very important to a community of people,” Serena wrote. The player who spanned decades added, “Probably the best word to describe what I do is development. I am here to tell you that I am developing away from tennis, towards other things that are important to me.”
