Earlier, the Lankan Lions won the lottery, elected first in the game and did not make any changes to the eleventh play. On the other hand, the Afghan national cricket team made one change to the team as Samiullah Shinwari replaced the patient Azmatullah Omarzai.

Hitting first, Afghanistan was off to a very good start with openers Rehmanullah Gurbaz and Hazratullah Zazai breaking 40 throws in the first 4 times. Afghanistan lost its first small gate in the fifth inning after Hazratullah Zazai was cleaned by Dilshan Madushanka. At the end of the powerplay, the Afghan team was at 49/1.
