UFC 282 Top 5 Results: Jan Blachowicz vs. Magomed Ankalayev

UFC 282, the final pay-per-view of 2022, is in the books. While the event won’t be one of the best of the year, it did have plenty of fun endings. Sure, the two UFC 282 headliners didn’t end in violence, but that didn’t matter like most other fights did, resulting in plenty of bonuses.

So, with knockouts, submissions and total dominance on offer, who pulled off the better stoppage last night? Here are the top five results from UFC 282: Jan Blachowicz vs. Magomed Ankalayev.

#5. Chris Curtis – defeated Joaquin Buckley in a UFC Middleweight bout

One of the more interesting preliminary bouts at UFC 282 pitted middleweights Chris Curtis and Joaquin Buckley. Both men have been responsible for some great results in recent years, leaving high hopes for another one here.

At first, it seemed that Buckley was the one who produced it. He started ‘Action Man’ in the first round and the early parts of the second, and Curtis didn’t seem to have much of an answer. In fact, he was apparently barely able to keep up with ‘New Mansa’, who seemed to be cruising towards victory. Unbelievably, though, in the second, it seemed as if Curtis had been playing possum the whole time.

Buckley was still more active, but he wasn’t landing as much. It seemed that Curtis had figured out the timing for him, and sure enough, when ‘New Mansa’ launched a bare kick, ‘Action Man’ capitalized. He hit Buckley with a vicious left hand that essentially floored him and then brutally finished him to the ground.

If anything, the fight could have been stopped a bit earlier if referee Jason Herzog had chosen to step in. It was an excellent win for Curtis, taking him to 4-1 in the UFC overall. After this, he has to be considered one of the most underrated fighters in the middleweight division.

#4. Ilia Topuria – defeated Bryce Mitchell in a UFC Featherweight bout

It’s arguable that the most impressive performance of UFC 282 belonged to featherweight prospect Ilia Topuria. Booked into what seemed like a tough fight to decide against fellow undefeated prospect Bryce Mitchell, ‘El Matador’ made things look easy. More specifically, while he could have easily reached a decision after dominating virtually every second of the fight, he opted to finish Mitchell off in the most impressive way possible.

Mitchell quickly became known as one of the most intense fighters in the featherweight division in his short career in the Octagon. He had even achieved the submission of the second tornado in the promotion’s history. However, after dismantling him on his feet, Topuria took him down, slapped him down with a rather tight arm triangle choke, and forced him to submit in round two.

Given that three of his first four Octagon victories have come by way of knockout, it’s hard to downplay the significance of this submission win, particularly considering who it was against. Simply put, Topuria is a title contender at 145 pounds.

#3. Santiago Ponzinibbio – defeated Alex Morono in a UFC catchweight bout

Initially, Santiago Ponzinibbio was supposed to face Robbie Lawler last night. While ‘Ruthless’ is in the worst moment of his career, many fans would still consider him a bigger threat than Alex Morono, who replaced him at late notice.

However, that theory did not quite add up. Morono took the fight to ‘La Daga Argentina’ and knocked him down in both the first and second rounds, but by the third, it was clear that he was tired. Ponzinibbio, meanwhile, was much fresher and showed that he hadn’t lost too much of his durability. Sensing that ‘The Great White’ was tired and hurt, he stepped forward and landed a massive combination that ended with a right hand.

Morono collapsed with the shot and crashed to the ground. Moments later, referee Jason Herzog dove in to rescue him.

This was not only one of the best finishes at UFC 282, but also one of the best comebacks of 2022. Had the fight gone another two and a half minutes and gone the distance, Morono would have undoubtedly won. As it was, Ponzinibbio not only picked up his first win since June 2021, but also claimed a nice $50k bonus for his efforts.

#two. Raul Rosas Jr. – defeated Jay Perrin in a UFC Bantamweight bout

At UFC 282, four fights ended in submission, but the best of all was produced by 18-year-old rookie Raúl Rosas Jr.

‘The Problem Kid’ used a nasty rear choke/neck crank combination to tag veteran Jay Perrin in the first round of their bantamweight clash. The victory not only gave Rosas Jr. a $50k bonus, it also meant that he now stands as the youngest fighter to win an octagon fight.

The victory was essentially a flawless victory for the teenager. Perrin came out aggressive with his punches, but once Rosas Jr. dropped him, it became clear that he was out of his depth despite being the more experienced fighter. It didn’t take long for ‘The Problem Kid’ to secure control of the back, and from there, he slapped into the final hold of the fight and accelerated it even as Perrin was trying to get to his feet. The academic tapout followed soon after.

Given that Perrin had never won a UFC fight before this one in two tries, it’s likely that this was the easiest fight Rosas Jr. could have asked for in his debut.

Given his young age, it’s important that the promotion treat him with care and not throw him to the wolves. But he clearly has star potential, and if he can continue to put together results like this, he may be destined for the top of the bantamweight mountain.

#1. Jairzinho Rozenstruik – defeated Chris Daukaus in a UFC Heavyweight bout

The fastest and arguably most violent finisher of UFC 282 belonged to heavyweight contender Jairzinho Rozenstruik. He needed just 23 seconds to turn the lights out on Chris Daukaus in a fight that would likely never go the distance.

Since both men have a combined 10 total finishes, it was just a matter of who would land something nasty first. The suspicion was always that ‘Bigi Boy’ was the more technical striker and would find a way to connect, and sure enough, those suspicions were right.

Daukaus landed right hand first, but that only allowed Rozenstruik to fire off the counter. The Surinamese native hit Daukaus with a left hand, then took him off balance with a knee and dropped him.

Daukaus was back on his feet, but from there, Rozenstruik was on him. ‘Bigi Boy’ was swarming with a combination and basically continued to drop bombs until Daukaus finally withered away. Anyone can guess where Daukaus, who has now lost three in a row, will go next. Rozenstruik, on the other hand, should still be considered a very dangerous heavyweight title contender.

Hopefully, the UFC can make another fun fight for him soon, as due to this quick finish, he’s likely going to be very ready.
