UK immigration center attack ‘terrorist’ incident, police say

The firebombing of a processing center in English Town was “motivated by a terrorist ideology”, police say.

British police have said a Molotov cocktail attack at an immigration center in Dover last week was motivated by far-right ideology.

No one was seriously injured in the Oct. 30 incident in the southern English port city, and police said 66-year-old Andrew Leak, who was found dead at a nearby petrol station shortly after the attack, apparently acted alone. .

“The Counter Terrorism Police South East (CTPSE) … has recovered evidence indicating that the attack on an immigration center in Dover on Sunday 30 October 2022 was motivated by a terrorist ideology,” the agency said in a statement on Saturday. .

“There is currently nothing to suggest that the offender was working with another person and there is not believed to be a major threat to the public,” police said in a statement.

Tim Jacques, senior national counterterrorism watchdog coordinator, added that while there were “strong indications that mental health was likely a factor,” he concluded that “the suspect’s actions were primarily driven by extremist ideology.”

These reached the “threshold of a terrorist incident”, he said.

Homemade incendiary devices were thrown at the Border Force Western Jet Foil center in Dover on Sunday, leaving two staff members with minor injuries.

The Dover Immigration Center is the first stop for thousands of people who made the perilous journey across the English Channel to seek asylum in the UK.
