–>Lakhimpur Kheri (Uttar Pradesh):
In the rape and murder of two minor Dalit sisters, aged 17 and 15, whose bodies were found yesterday, the police have arrested six people and claim to have solved the case. “Everyone involved is now under arrest,” the area’s police chief told reporters.
Here are the five key things police said:
Among the six detainees is one from the neighborhood of the victims. He had allegedly introduced the girls to three others, but was not at the scene of the crime. “The three who committed the crime and the two who helped them in a cover-up attempt are from another village close to the girls’,” Police Superintendent Sanjeev Suman said.
One of the men was caught this morning in an encounter with police, who shot him in the leg, the officer said. He had also been identified yesterday, police said. The six have been booked for murder and rape, as well as under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO).
Three of the men, friends of the girls, had taken them on motorcycles, SP told reporters. She said “they were not forcibly abducted.” Her mother had alleged a kidnapping, but the officer said she trusted the men because they were friends.
“The men took advantage of being friends and raped them. When the girls started saying that they would have to marry them, the men got angry and strangled them with their dupattas. They then called two of their friends, who helped them hang the girls to make it look like a suicide,” she said.
The post-mortem examination is being carried out by a panel of three doctors. “It will be filmed and some family members of the victims will be inside because they wanted to be safe,” SP Suman said, adding: “We will do whatever the family wants. That is important, we understand.” He denied reports that local police had argued yesterday with the family of the victims.
