A hospital in Uttar Pradesh was plunged into darkness on Saturday, but then doctors began examining patients under moving torch lights, videos showed.
The hospital in Balia district suffered a power outage after heavy rain yesterday, and reports say patients have been receiving treatment under moving torch lights for more than an hour.
One of the videos showed several people crowding a woman on a stretcher, while one of them was holding a mobile phone to highlight it while a doctor examined her.
In other photos, patients are shown sitting in complete darkness.
Dr. R. said. Dr.. Ram, the orthopedic surgeon in charge of the area hospital, explained what happened: “There was a disruption for 15-20 minutes as we were getting batteries for the generator.”
He claimed the hospital had a generator for backup but it took time to get the batteries.
When asked why there was no battery in the generator, he said, “There is always a fear that the batteries will be stolen. And then they will be removed.”
There was no comment from the state government so far on the incident.
