War in Ukraine triggers record rise in global military spending

UNITED NATIONS, Apr 24 (IPS) – The United Nations has warned that the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 threatens to push up to 1.7 billion people — more than a fifth of humanity — into poverty, destitution and hunger.

Long before the war, Ukraine and Russia provided about 30 percent of the world’s wheat and barley, a fifth of its corn, and more than half its sunflower oil. But the ongoing 14-month war has sapped – and cut off – most of these supplies.
