Opposition supporters are demanding the resignation of the prime minister and an interim government before the 2023 election.

The main opposition party in Bangladesh has staged a series of anti-government protests in recent weeks.

Witnesses say up to 100,000 people turned out for the latest rally called by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the capital Dhaka on Saturday.

A poor economy, rising food and fuel prices, and power outages appear to have sparked long-standing anger against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Protesters want her to resign and make way for an interim government before elections scheduled for next year.

The Awami League’s Hasina has a long-standing rivalry with BNP leader and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
