Australia beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets in yesterday’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12 match in Perth. Bowling first after winning the toss, the defending champions held Sri Lanka to 157/6 in the Group 1 clash. Marcus Stoinis then crushed an unbeaten 18-ball 59 as the Aussies hit the target in 16.3 overs.
Sri Lanka got off to a poor start with the bat, losing Kusal Mendis in form to Pat Cummins by 5. The aggressive batsman missed a shot and was caught. The people of Lanka never fully recovered from the great setback. Pathum Nissanka and Dhananjaya de Silva added 69 for the second wicket, but it didn’t hit the desired pace.
The partnership ended when De Silva (26 of 23) was caught at long range, trying to take on Ashton Agar, who replaced Adam Zampa (tested positive for COVID-19). Nissanka then went 40-for-45 short after a mix-up with Charith Asalanka.
Bhanuka Rajapaksa (7), Dasun Shanaka (3) and Wanindu Hasaranga (1) fell in quick succession as the Lankans dropped to 120/6. Asalanka (38* out of 25) and Chamika Karunaratne (14* out of 7), however, met Cummins in the last over, which went for 20. His late assault lifted Sri Lanka past 150.
Chasing down the 158, Australia lost David Warner for the 11, who was caught on a delivery by Maheesh Theekshana. Mitchell Marsh then perished on a run-a-ball 17. Australian captain Aaron Finch looked completely beside himself and was helped by Glenn Maxwell, who came in and ran 22 from 6 balls.
After Maxwell fell to Karunaratne 23 of 12, Stoinis came on and put Sri Lanka out of contention with a vicious strike. He recorded the fastest fifty by an Australian batsman on T20Is-17 balls.
Stoinis was extremely harsh on the Sri Lankan spinners. He hit Leggie Hasaranga (0/53 in three overs) for two sixes and a four in 15 overs. In the next over, he met Theekshana and hit three sixes, the third of which raised his half-century.
Finch, who remained undefeated on an unconvincing 31-for-42 ball, hit the winning runs off a pair of Lahiru Kumara bowling.
Who won the Man of the Match award in the AUS vs SL T20 World Cup 2022 match?
Most of the Australian bowlers kept things tight. Josh Hazlewood, Cummins, Starc, Agar and Maxwell each claimed a wicket. The Big Show also contributed a crucial cameo in the chase. Stoinis was outstanding with his big shots, hitting four fours and six sixes.
For Sri Lanka, Nissanka scored 40 while Asalanka contributed an impressive 38 not outs.
Stoinis was named Man of the Match for his brutal assault on Sri Lankan bowlers.
