Whoopi Goldberg addressed a film critic who claimed she wore a fat suit in the Emmett Till biopic, Until.
During Monday’s episode of the viewGoldberg, who plays Alma Carthan in the film, reacted to the comment, explaining that she wasn’t wearing a fat suit for the role.
“There was a young lady who writes for one of the magazines, and she was distracted by my fat suit, in her review,” Goldberg said. “I don’t really care how you felt about the movie, but you should know it wasn’t a fat suit, it was me. That was steroids. Do you remember last year? I guess you don’t watch the show. [The View]or you would know it wasn’t a fat suit,” he explained, referring to the health challenges he faced last year.
She continued, “I just want you to know that it’s okay not to be a fan of a movie, but you want to let go of people’s looks. Just comment on the performance, and if you have any questions, ask someone. I’m sure you didn’t mean to be demeaning.
After the view co-host Sunny Hostin noted that a reviewer should do their research before writing, Goldberg added: about them as an actor. If you are not sure if it is they who are there, do not make general statements, because it seems that you do not know what he is doing”.
Goldberg did not identify the author of the review or post.
Until, directed by Chinonye Chukwu, tells the true story of Mamie Till-Mobley’s quest for justice for her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till, who was brutally lynched in 1955. Speaking about the film, Goldberg told the audience that he didn’t be “concerned about violence” because the film “is not violence.” “If you’re watching Jeffrey Dahmer [Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story] … you have seen much more violence than you will see in this,” he added. “It is an important film for families because if you are a mother, this could be your child. 67 years ago this happened and we’re still in the middle of it.”
The New York Film Festival hosted the world premiere of Until on Saturday, where Goldberg, who in addition to playing Mamie Till’s mother and Emmett’s grandmother is also an executive producer on the film, explained that the film took more than a decade to come to fruition. Until received a standing ovation from the festival audience, with star Danielle Deadwyler, who was already receiving awards for her portrayal of Mamie Till-Mobley.
