world of warcraft: Flight of the Dragon revisits Dragon Aspects, a set of powerful characters that have helped players overcome in-game issues and bottlenecks for the past 18 years. Each Aspect commands a Dragonflight, a group of dragons that specialize in powerful magic. The Red, Black, Blue, Green, and Bronze Dragonflights each have their own internal struggles to contend with, along with the new threat of the ancient Primalist dragons stirring up the Dragon Isles. One of these Dragonflights has particularly Interesting conflicts to overcome, because it is a family drama with some very messy protagonists.
The black dragonflight has an interesting role in world of warcraft because they are almost extinct. His Aspect, Neltharion, ended up listening to the whispers of the Old Gods of Azeroth, going berserk and turning on the other four. Wrathion is the heir to Neltharion, and players met him during the Cataclysm Y Mists of Pandaria expansions Another dragon, Sabellian, is challenging Neltharion’s claim. Its alot. We have a fight on our hands, and neither side is the good one.
In a corner, we have Sabelian. Sabelian was abandoned by the villainous Deathwing on the shattered planet of Outland after a history of service to the corrupted Aspect. He flourished without his father in the picture and made a home in Outland, where he found a way to cleanse the corruption of the black dragons. By the time the players meet him in the flaming crusadecomes across as a sensible and helpful ally.
Wrathion, on the other hand, has had a lot more screen time. That’s not necessarily for his benefit; we’ve followed the character since he was a hot-headed kid. The guy has done some nice things, like helping players kill the Old God N’Zoth, and overall he can be a lovely guy to hang out with. But Wrathion has also made some pretty bad decisions, like releasing a war criminal from custody to start a war that strengthens both factions. (It didn’t work and nobody liked the results.)

Both characters have returned to the Dragon Isles and are extolling their individual virtues at Waking Shores Obsidian Citadel. Each of the dragons is happy to tell you why he should be the man in charge of their Dragonflight, and each also tries to emphasize that they he would do the right thing and would not be corrupted by power at all. His Dragonflight was on the brink of extinction; he says a lot when he calls himself the predecessor of his work To the death. There is no immediate resolution to this particular conflict; never reaches the murderous intensity of dragon house. Both characters are diplomatic in their approach, and it’s more like a family Thanksgiving when someone brings up a hot topic.
Sabelian has been off-screen for over a decade, and Wrathion has always been cast as the natural heir to the Aspect title, so watching this new conflict play out is one of the immediately exciting parts of dragon flight. Players can also pledge their allegiance to one or the other in a final game of weekly missions. It’s fun to watch a messy little family drama play out on Azeroth.
