Zoe Saldaña Says She “Felt Artistically Stuck” While Working on Film Franchises for Past 10 Years

Zoe Saldaña reflects on the top box office projects that have helped define her career since the late 2000s.

During a recent interview with Daily women’s clothingThe actress said she is grateful to have been a part of huge blockbusters but that it led her to feel “artistically stuck.” Saldana, whose Netflix series right from the start released in October, she stars as Neytiri in the highly anticipated upcoming month Avatar: The Path of Water and is set to reprise her role as Gamora in guardians of the galaxy vol. 3It will be out in May.

“I feel like for the last 10 years of my life, I’ve been stuck. I felt trapped doing these franchises,” said the actress. “I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given, from collaborating with amazing directors and meeting cast members I consider friends to being able to play a role that fans, especially kids, love. But it also meant that I felt artistically trapped in my craft of not being able to expand, grow or challenge myself by playing different kinds of genres and different roles.”

Saldaña, who shares three children with her husband Marco Perego, noted that she has previously found herself struggling with the pressure that Hollywood and society in general can place on women who have started a family and are over 40 years old. However, she made it clear that she is optimistic about what her career holds as she moves forward.

“But today, now that I’m 44, I’ve been able to have these opportunities, and I’ve taken control of my aging and I’ve taken control of my voice and how I think of myself as a woman,” she continued. “And I’m very happy to be able to collaborate with filmmakers and producers and people in this industry who want that for women, who want women to be ageless and not fetishize women’s youth. And so it’s interesting. It’s really interesting.”

Saldana, who had an early career turn in 2003 Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black PearlShe had a great 2009, playing Uhura in star trek and then in Avatarbefore her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut came five years later with the first Guardians of the Galaxy delivery.
