LIV Golf is shutting down. Lawyers for the breakaway league told a United States bankruptcy court on Thursday that it will wind down its operations and liquidate its assets, bringing an end to the five-year experiment that fractured professional golf.

At a 13-minute hearing in Trenton, New Jersey, attorney Matthew Williams told the court that LIV would not proceed with its planned relaunch, known as LIV 2.0. “The debtors are not currently proceeding with the LIV 2.0 plan,” Williams said. “Instead, the debtors are toggling to a value-maximizing wind-down in their business.”

The decision followed the collapse of a proposed rescue deal with BC Partners Credit. The private capital firm agreed last month to provide up to $300 million to fund a player-owned version of the tour for 2027, but withdrew on Wednesday after the league could not secure enough player commitments to make the new model viable. LIV said in a statement that “despite extensive discussions, the relevant parties were ultimately unable to reach a consensual resolution of certain outstanding terms” of the deal, which “has been terminated, and the transaction is not expected to move forward at this time”.

LIV filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New Jersey on 8 September. Its lawyers told the court they intend to file a plan for winding down the company’s operations by Monday, 9 November, when the liquidation process will formally begin. The creditors’ committee will meet on 20 November, with a further hearing scheduled for 24 November.

The league was launched in 2022 with the backing of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which poured more than $5 billion into the venture in an attempt to challenge the PGA Tour. The fund announced in April that it would stop financing LIV after the 2026 season, leaving the league to find new investors or close. Its final tournament was held in August in Indianapolis.

The DP World Tour has said players who remained with LIV would not be eligible for membership on its circuit in 2027, leaving the league’s players to seek a return to the established tours once the wind-down is complete.
