At least five people have been killed and about a dozen more injured after a gunman opened fire on crowds in the main market square of Krakow, Poland, on Saturday afternoon.
Polish police said the shooting happened at around 3pm local time, when a man drove onto the square and opened fire from within his vehicle at what appeared to be random passers-by.
The suspected gunman was shot by police and taken to hospital, police said in a post on X. Police officers were among those injured, and emergency services were still working at the scene in the hours after the attack.
The death toll is still evolving. Earlier reports, citing the fire brigade, put the number of dead at two, with at least 10 injured. Police later raised the toll to at least five dead and about a dozen injured. The figures have not yet been independently confirmed and may change as the investigation continues.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said police were investigating the “tragic shooting” and that he was being kept informed by the interior ministry.
Krakow’s main market square, the Rynek Glowny, is one of Europe’s largest medieval squares, lined with cafes and bars and usually busy with tourists. Heavily armed police in helmets and tactical gear were deployed to the square, with sirens sounding as pedestrians moved away from the area.
No motive has been given, and police have not released further details about the suspected gunman. Poland, like most European Union countries, has strict rules on gun ownership, and very few people are permitted to own or carry firearms in public. Mass shootings are rare in the country.
This is a developing story, and the casualty figures and circumstances may be updated as police release more information.
