US Senator Chris Murphy has been hospitalised after suffering a stroke, his office announced on Sunday, in a serious health scare for the Connecticut Democrat two days before the midterm elections.

Murphy, 53, began experiencing numbness in his arm on Saturday afternoon while attending his son’s hockey game, according to a statement from his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined he had experienced a stroke.

He has since been transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment, Herwitt said. “The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” she said in the statement.

Murphy is one of the Senate’s most prominent Democrats and has spent recent weeks campaigning for fellow Democrats ahead of Tuesday’s midterms, although he is not himself on the ballot this year. His office has not said when he might leave hospital or return to Senate duties.

The announcement drew swift messages of support from across the political divide. Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont said he had been with Murphy just two days earlier, while Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, who suffered a stroke during his own 2022 campaign, wished him a full and speedy recovery. President Donald Trump, a frequent target of Murphy’s criticism, told reporters he was surprised by the news and would consider reaching out to the senator at the right time.

Important limits remain on what is publicly known. Murphy’s office has not disclosed the type or severity of the stroke, the treatment he has received, or whether he has any lasting effects, and no timetable for his discharge has been given. The office’s statement is so far the sole source for his condition, so the encouraging prognosis should be read as the office’s account rather than an independently verified medical assessment.
