Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, is working on a new collaboration with OpenAI, its chairman said on Friday, in the latest sign of how tightly the AI boom is binding together chipmakers, server builders and model developers.
Chairman Young Liu told reporters at the company’s annual technology showcase in Taipei that he had met OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman earlier in the day and that an announcement would follow once details are confirmed. He gave no further specifics.
Any new deal would build on an agreement struck last year under which the two companies work together on designing and engineering data-centre racks, components and other AI hardware, Liu said.
Foxconn, formally Hon Hai Precision Industry, is Nvidia’s biggest maker of AI servers and has increasingly staked its growth on AI infrastructure. The company said in August that its cloud and networking products segment, which includes AI servers, accounted for 51% of second-quarter revenue, exceeding half of sales for the first time.
The announcement comes at a jittery moment for AI stocks. Shares in the sector have been hit hard by worries that relentless heavy investment may not be sustainable as borrowing costs climb, and that the billions pouring into data centres may take longer than hoped to generate returns.
Liu pushed back on that fear. He said the industry was not in a bubble and that Foxconn expects to maintain double-digit growth next year. Foxconn has six factory buildings in Houston, Texas, where it manufactures AI servers for Nvidia, and Liu said it sees a need for further expansion there.
Separately, Foxconn said it is making progress on putting humanoid robots to work in its own plants. Brand Cheng, chairman of the Foxconn Industrial Internet unit, told Reuters that more than 10 humanoid robots have been deployed at its Texas facilities for internal use, with plans to extend deployment beyond the state.
The unit introduced two wheeled models in October, one that lifts things vertically and one that can bend at the waist for assembly and loading work. It is developing AI models for the robots based on Nvidia’s GR00T foundation model, according to presentation materials seen by Reuters.
Note on sourcing: the details of any new Foxconn-OpenAI collaboration have not yet been confirmed by either company, and no announcement date has been given.
