At least seven people were killed and 112 injured when two passenger trains collided south of Cairo on Sunday, Egypt’s health ministry said.

The crash happened in the Al-Ayyat district of Giza province, about 76 kilometres south of the capital, between Kafr Ammar and Al-Raqqa stations. The state railway authority said a train travelling from Giza to Fayoum, service No. 134, struck the rear of another train heading from Cairo to Aswan, service No. 2010. Several carriages derailed.

Dozens of ambulances were sent to the scene and the injured were taken to hospitals nearby. The health ministry said 45 of the injured had been discharged after treatment. Cranes were brought in to clear the wreckage, and services on the Cairo to Upper Egypt line were disrupted while emergency crews worked at the site.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ordered a swift investigation and said anyone found negligent should be held accountable. Egypt’s public prosecutor’s office said investigations were under way to establish the technical causes of the collision. The cause had not been established by Sunday evening.

The toll was revised upwards during the day: the health ministry first reported four people killed and 88 injured, before raising the figures to seven dead and 112 injured.

Egypt’s railways, the oldest in Africa and the Middle East, have a long history of deadly accidents. In 2019, a train lost control approaching Cairo’s Ramses station and caught fire, killing 25 people. In 2017, a derailment and head-on collision near Alexandria killed more than 40 people. The government has spent heavily on modernising signalling and track in recent years, but accidents continue to claim lives.
