Seven people were wounded in a shooting in downtown Bloomington, Indiana, in the early hours of Sunday, during the homecoming weekend at Indiana University.

Bloomington police said the shooting happened at about 1:30 a.m. local time on Kirkwood Avenue, in the block between Grant Street and Dunn Street, about two blocks west of the university campus. The street is a popular gathering spot for students, and a large crowd had assembled there after Indiana’s homecoming football game, which the Hoosiers won in overtime against Minnesota earlier in the evening.

City and university police officers were already nearby, monitoring the crowd, when they heard several gunshots and moved towards the sound, according to a police news release reported by local outlet the B Square Bulletin. Officers then saw a man with a gun running north-east from the area and chased him, catching him east of Indiana Avenue near Dunn Meadow. A gun was found nearby.

Police stressed that it is currently unknown whether the man in custody was the person who fired the shots. Bloomington’s deputy chief of police, Ryan Pedigo, told local television station WTHR, as reported by the New York Post, that officers had heard multiple gunshots amid the large crowd and that a fight in the crowd was believed to have immediately preceded the shooting.

Several people were found in the downtown area with wounds thought to have been caused by the shooting, and seven were taken by ambulance to area hospitals. Police said it was possible there were more victims who had not yet come forward, but no fatalities had been reported. The conditions of the seven hospitalised people were not known at the time of the reports.

Investigators found several shell casings of different calibres on the pavement near 420 Kirkwood Avenue, the address of a Chipotle restaurant, suggesting more than one gun may have been fired, according to the local reports. That detail has not been confirmed by police as proof of multiple shooters.

Police have asked anyone with information or video footage to contact Detective Chris Scott at the Bloomington Police Department. The investigation was continuing on Sunday morning, with the circumstances of the shooting and any motive still unclear.
