Who won yesterday’s match in IPL 2023?

Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by five wickets in yesterday’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Sent out to bat after losing the toss, KKR put 185/6 on the board as Venkatesh Iyer scored with 104 from 51 balls. The fabulous strike was for naught, however, as MI chased down the target in 17.4 overs.

Rohit Sharma (20 of 13), who was not listed in the starting XI, came on as Impact Player. He added 65 for the first wicket with Ishan Kishan in 4.5 overs. Rohit fell to a brilliant catch from Umesh Yadav off Suyash Sharma’s bowling.

Kishan sported an ominous touch and hit five fours and as many sixes in his 58, which came off just 25 balls. The fiery shot from him ended when Varun Chakravarthy tossed it, looking to play the slog sweep.

Significantly for MI, substitute skipper Suryakumar Yadav rallied between runs, hitting a typically aggressive 43 from 25 balls. After getting off to a confident start, he took on Lockie Ferguson and hit him for six straight. SKY and Tilak Varma (30 for 25) added 60 runs for the third wicket.

The stand ended when Tilak was floored by Suyash Sharma. Suryakumar also fell short of the finish line, caught behind Shardul Thakur. However, Tim David played another impressive 24* cameo in 13 balls to secure a comfortable win for Mumbai.

Solo act by Venkatesh Iyer for KKR

Coming into bat at No. 3, Iyer hit six fours and as many as nine sixes in his stupendous innings. Batting first, Kolkata lost Narayan Jagadeesan to a duck when Hrithik Shokeen took an excellent diving catch off Cameron Green’s bowling. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (8 of 12) fell cheaply again when he tried to take on Piyush Chawla.

Nitish Rana (5), Shardul Thakur (13) and Rinku Singh (18) also failed to make significant contributions as the contest came down to Iyer vs Mumbai.

The left-hander kept finding the limits at regular intervals and became only the second KKR batsman to crush a ton of IPL, Brendon McCullum being the first.

A spirited cameo from Andre Russell (21* out of 11) also helped Kolkata’s cause.
